Tips For Your Pets During Cold Weather

As the temperature gets colder and colder, here are a few tips to keep your pets safe during the winter.

Tips For Your Pets During Cold Weather #1:
As the temperatures decrease outdoor cats will seek warmth where they can. The most common spot is under the hood of a car because of the heat generated by the engine. This can be extremely dangerous or even fatal for the cat if the engine is started while they are still under the hood. If you have outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the hood of your car prior to starting it so the cat can have a chance to escape. The best tip for your cats is to keep them indoors especially when the weather is cold.

Tips For Your Pets During Cold Weather #2:
Dogs can actually lose their sense of smell during snowstorms so make sure that your dog is on a leash or fenced yard when you let them outside. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure they have identification tags and/or a microchip. If you walk your dog off of your property during the winter, wipe their paws when you return home. Dogs can ingest salt, antifreeze and other dangerous chemicals by licking their paws after a walk.

Tips For Your Pets During Cold Weather #3:
Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter. A longer coat of hair will provide an additional layer of warmth. If you bath your dog during the winter, make sure they are completely dry before you let them outside. If you own a dog with short hair, you might consider purchasing a dog coat or sweater for them to wear when they venture outdoors.

Tips For Your Pets During Cold Weather #4:
Never leave your dog or cat in your vehicle during cold weather. The car will actually act as a refrigerator and hold the cold air in which could cause your pet to freeze to death.

Tips For Your Pets During Cold Weather #5:
Make sure your pets have a nice warm place to sleep. It should be off the floor and away from drafts. A dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow would make an excellent place for your pets during cold weather.
