Service Dog Training

The wrong way to train your dog is to punish them - you will scare them and they will be afraid of you and not learn what you are trying to teach them. Socialization is so very important during the first five months of the puppy's life - especially a service dog - letting the puppy get use to strange sights, sounds and smells will make him/her a more stable dog as they grow older. Obedience training should be fun and rewarding for both you and your dog. With positive reinforcement training, all you have to do is ignore the behavior that you don't wish to see repeated - not getting any attention (because you're deliberately ignoring her) is enough to make just about any dog pretty miserable, and thus is a powerful correctional tool.

Training your dog allows her to employ that instinct to follow someone else, and makes her feel more secure. The second command you should teach your down is "down" - dogs can become pretty hyperactive when they get excited - jumping up on their owner's lap is usually how they express their excitement - when they jump up, tell them "down" - do not pet them or act excited to see them
