Always give a treat after a click even if you’ve accidentally clicked - the dog must have absolute faith in the ‘click means treat’ routine. One advantage to using the click and treat form of training at home is it’s easy to learn for both the dog and his trainer! Clicker training is a method of ‘positive reinforcement training’ - that is, rewarding the behaviours that we like instead of punishing behaviours that we don’t like - when the dog does what we want him to do, we ‘click’ and give him a treat.

The click and treat method offers a faster response than verbal praise and if the trainer is working at a distance from the dog, the clicker will still work, without having to be right next him. A clicker is simply a small plastic box, containing a metal plate which, when pressed, makes a ‘click’ sound. Clicker training is not electronic dog

Basic dog obedience training, especially therapy dog training, is more than just telling a dog to do what we want him to do - it is a way of teaching a dog to behave properly or in a way we deem proper under certain specific conditions or circumstances. If there is nothing being accomplished in a lesson and your dog is not learning, end the session - if you try to continue and try to force your dog to do what you want, he will no longer trust you or the relationship that you have. When teaching your dog the come and heel command, use a friendly voice.
