Cheesy Doglights

1 cup uncooked oatmeal
1/4 cup butter or bacon drippings
1 egg, beaten
1-1/2 cups hot water
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 cup wheat germ
4 oz. (1 cup) grated cheese
3 cups whole wheat flour

In a large bowl pour hot water over oatmeal and butter/bacon drippings; let stand for 5 minutes. Stir in powdered milk, grated cheese, egg. Add cornmeal and wheat germ. Mix well. Add flour, 1/3 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Knead 3-4 minutes, adding more flour if necessary to make a very stiff dough.

Pat or roll dough to 1/2" thickness. Cut into shapes and place on a greased baking sheet.

Bake for 1 hour at 300 degrees F. Turn off heat and dry in oven for 1-1/2 hours or longer.

Makes approximately 2-1/4 pounds.




Peanut Butter Dreams

1-1/2 cups water
1/4 cup canola oil
1/4 cup sugar free applesauce
2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
1/3 cup peanut butter
2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
3/4 cup unbleached flour
1 cup cornmeal
3/4 cup oats

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Mix liquid ingredients together well. Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients bowl and mix thoroughly until smooth.

Roll into a ball; place ball on floured surface. Roll out to 1/2" thickness. Cut into desired shapes.

Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 20 minutes; turn off the oven and leave biscuits in there for one hour to harden.

Makes approximately 80 medium bones.




Low Fat

2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup quick cooking rolled oats
1-1/2 tsps. garlic powder
2 Tbsps. canola oil
2 egg whites
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup skim milk
1 cup cold water

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, rolled oats and garlic powder. In a small bowl, whisk oil, egg whites, molasses, milk and water. Make a well in the flour mixture and gradually stir in egg mixture until well blended.

Divide dough into 2 balls, so it is easy to work with. Knead each dough ball on a well floured surface, about 2 minutes. With a rolling pin, roll dough to 1/2" thickness.

Cut with cookie cutter and place on a baking sheet lined with foil.

Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Turn oven off and leave biscuits to harden for 1 hour. Cool on a rack and store at room temperature in a container with a loose-fitting lid.

Makes approximately 40 medium bones.




Plaque Buster

3/4 cup powdered skim milk
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup bulgar wheat
2-1/4 cups whole wheat flour
1 chicken bouillon cube
1-1/2 cups boiling water
1 cup quick cooking rolled oats
1 egg, beaten

In a mixing bowl, combine powdered skim milk, cornmeal, bulgar wheat and flour and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve bouillon cube in boiling water. Add rolled oats and let stand, about 5 minutes. Then stir in beaten egg. Gradually stir in dry ingredients, half a cup at a time, until well blended. The last few cupfuls, blend with your hands.

Divide dough into 2 balls, so it is easy to work with. Knead each dough ball on a floured surface, about 5 minutes. With a rolling pin, roll dough between 1/4" to 1/2" thickness.

Cut with cookie cutter and place on a baking sheet lined with foil.

Bake 50 minutes at 325 degrees F (160 degrees C). Turn oven off and let biscuits cool several hours or overnight, in the oven. Store at room temperature in a container with a loose-fitting lid.

Makes approximately 40 medium bones.




Veggie Biscuits

2-1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup dry milk powder
1/2 cup canola oil
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 vegetable bouillon cubes; dissolved in
3/4 boiling water
1/2 cup carrots (optional)
1 egg

Preheat oven 300 degrees F.

Mix all ingredients into a ball and roll out to about 1/4" thickness.

Cut with boned shaped cookie cutter, or strips, or a cutter shape of your own choice. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake 30 minutes. Leave in oven to cool and dry.

Makes approximately 35 medium bones.





Treat Ingredients

Peanut butter is a healthy protein source that is easily digested. Peanut butter is also a great source of vitamin E, a strong antioxidant that protects cell membranes from free radical attack. By giving canola to your canine you can help to increase circulation, reduce joint tenderness, and maintain a healthy immune system. Plus, it's terrific for maintaining healthy skin and coat.

Garlic is a great source of selenium, which must be present in the body for proper immune response, and which also acts as an antioxidant in the presence of vitamin E. Selenium can minimize the effects of daily stress. Garlic is also an effective antibiotic, anti-fungal and anti-viral agent.

Brewers yeast provides a high source of protein, zinc and biotin for healthier skin and coats. It is a natural source of vitamins, minerals and natural protein to promote a healthy, shiny coat. Helps control shedding and conditions skin.

Carob powder contains none of the dangerous ingredients found in the cocoa bean, like allergy-producing antibodies or the caffeine stimulant theobromine, which can be fatal to some dogs. It's tasty - and healthy. It is high in vitamin B2, calcium, magnesium and iron.

Oats are low in starch and high in potassium, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium as well as rich in vitamin B and a good source of iron to help build strong bones, nails and teeth.

Eggs are an excellent source of protein, amino acids, phosphorus, iron, zinc, potassium, vitamin A and vitamin D. Eggs help with the absorption of calcium and phosphorus.
